Dark, bold, and unapologetically smooth, the Midnight Espresso Old Fashioned is made for late nights and unhurried pours. This cocktail leans into roasted coffee depth while keeping the backbone of a classic Old Fashioned intact. It’s rich without being sweet, bitter without being sharp, and endlessly sippable.
Instead of relying on heavy liqueurs alone, this version layers espresso tones with bitters and a restrained touch of sweetness. The result is a cocktail that feels intentional—balanced, aromatic, and just a little indulgent.
If you have a smoker, this drink absolutely shines with a quick aromatic finish. If not, it still stands tall with zero shortcuts.
Ingredients
- 1 oz bourbon
- 1 oz espresso liqueur
- 0.25 oz demerara syrup
- 2 dashes cocoa bitters
- 1 dash orange bitters
- 1 large ice cube
- Orange peel for garnish
- Espresso beans for garnish
Instructions
- Add the bourbon, espresso liqueur, demerara syrup, and bitters directly to an Old Fashioned glass
- Place the large ice cube into the glass
- Stir gently for 20–25 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted
- Express an orange peel over the glass and drop it in or discard
- If using a smoker, briefly infuse the glass with your preferred wood (cherry or oak work great), then serve immediately
This cocktail is best enjoyed slowly no rush, no distractions. The coffee notes deepen as the ice melts, revealing more bourbon character with every sip. It works beautifully as a nightcap or alongside a simple dessert.
